A yacht passes under the main span of the bridge. The central span is 190 metres across, and the maximum height is 45 metres (equivalent to a 16 storey building). The piers on built on islands made from 44,000 concrete blocks to protect the bridge from shipping collisions. (From Institution of Civil Engineers website).
