A view of the sails on TM4697 : Herringfleet Marsh Mill. These are cloth sails: "the sails are fitted with a framework on one edge and a canvas is stretched across the sail when ready to run" Link . "This particular mill was erected before the innovation of winding gears, or “curbills”, and has to be pulled round by hand so that the sails are face on to the wind."
Whilst doing a trawl online for ‘Herringfleet Hills’ I came across your pictures on the geograph website. I wonder if you are aware that the car park is now closed and the Somerleyton Estate has or is about to install pigs on the open space. Access to the Herringfleet smock mill is promised but this will not help much if there is nowhere to park along the busy road. Apparently pigs will be kept there for two years after which the Estate says they will plant wild flowers. Even if this is successful it will certainly not replace the original flora and fauna of this ancient site. I would be grateful if you would amend the details.
