TL9473 : The Governor

taken 14 years ago, near to Bardwell, Suffolk, England

The Governor
The Governor
A view of the governor on the second floor, like on a steam engine TM1694 : Jessop and Appleby Steam Engine. The mill stones can be seen set into the floor above.
The governor is powered by the main shaft, showing the speed. The centrifugal force of the balls lifts and lowers the 'steel yard'. This in turn moves the iron tenter beam and thus minutely altering the distance between the runner stone and bottom stone. The distance effects the flour coarseness and quality.
Bardwell Windmill

Bardwell tower mill was built in late 1829 or early 1830; it replaced the village’s old post mill which was sold and moved away a few years later. A small mill of four storeys, it stands in company with its original outbuildings which include the miller’s cottage and an old bakery. Due to its size it only has two stones, other taller and more powerful mills could boast four.
Presently under restoration it can be viewed with kind permission of the volunteers or at open days. Presently the second pair of sails are being painted and assembled. One pair was put up in late August 2010. Inside is an interesting view of the governor mechanism, also the spur wheel and stones.
