Polkey's Mill and Reedham Marsh Steam Engine House
Polkey's Mill is sometimes called Reedham Hall Level Mill or Reedham Marshes South Mill (the latter to distinguish it from Reedham Marshes North Mill, located a short distance further to the north and now derelict). 'Polkey' was probably the nickname of one of the Thaxter family who were marshmen and farmers here in the late 19th century. The original tower of the windpump had mill cloth sails which were later replaced by somewhat longer patent sails, requiring the heightening of the tower by about one metre. Interestingly, the sails turn clockwise, whereas most sails turn anti-clockwise.
The mill was in use until 1941 when it was made redundant by the installation of diesel engines just across the road from here. The derelict mill was taken over by the Norfolk Windmills Trust in 1981 and the restoration and repair work was completed in 2006.
