Cadge's Mill, Reedham Marshes
This mill is also known as Kedge's, Batchie's and Stimpson's mill, often named after the marshman currently in charge. It was built between 1870 and the early 1880s and replaced an earlier mill on this site which used to be operated by Robert Burgess who lived at Seven Mile House. The present mill worked until 1941, when it was replaced by diesel pumps and gradually fell derelict.
In the 1980s the Norfolk County Council carried out emergency repairs to make the mill weathertight. This enabled the Internal Drainage Board to install the switchgear for the electric pump inside the mill, giving it a new lease of life. A new cap was fitted in 2006.
The modern equipment immediately to the west (out of shot) is automatic and works when the water levels in the dykes are high. It is more powerful than all the previous equipment put together. There is also a robot grab that works on a timer and clears objects from the dyke that might cause a blockage.
