Lowfield Heath Windmill
Lowfield Heath Windmill
Built around 1738, this post mill was originally situated in Lowfield Heath, on what is now the southern perimeter of Gatwick Airport. During the expansion of the airport in the late 1970s/early 1980s, much of the village of Lowfield Heath was subsumed by airport facilities and warehouses, and although proposals were put in place to retain the windmill, the owners were not willing to allow public access to it, which meant that grants for restoration, now needed because of its deteriorating state, would not be available. It was therefore decided to move it, and it was dismantled in the summer of 1987. Work started on rebuilding at its present site, some 2 - 3 miles from its original site, in 1988, with the main structure completed in 1990. There has been much work since, and with more needed, including the replacement of the two missing sweeps, which had to be removed due to rot.
Mills Open Weekend 2011

National Mills Weekend is an annual celebration of the UK's milling heritage. The event is organised by the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
The 2011 dates were the 14th and 15th May. Over 450 buildings were open to visitors meaning many to choose from. They ranged from fully working wind and water mills to under restoration or rarely open buildings.
