This is the bottom of the main vertical shaft that is bearing on a wooden cross beam. I'm not sure exactly how the bottom bearing is made and lubricated. Note the iron bands to keep the shaft from splitting. The octagonal section above carries the great spur wheel and this meshes with a stone nut top right.

My interest in mills has burgeoned further since 2006 and I would probably have taken more pictures now.
