Peabody Buildings
Throughout London you can still see the distinctive sandy-coloured brickwork and familiar style of the 19th Peabody housing estates. This one is in Clerkenwell and was built at a time when the area was a notorious slum. Living conditions were squalid but George Pesbody, an American who came to London and was shocked by the state of housing in the capital, used his wealth and influence to create homes with basic essentials and relieve the hardship of poor Londoners. Today they have been upgraded and are still used. The Peabody Trust remains a thriving housing association.
