RRS Discovery
Cluttered foredeck of the ship which took Captain Scott and his British National Antarctic Expedition to Antarctica. She was entombed in ice for two polar winters along with the men on board until they were able to escape with the help of some explosives and the thawing of the ice.
Freezing though it was and packed hard was the ice, their timbers were never shivered such was the strength of the ship and the mettle of the men.

.
The small black "biscuit-tins" with white lids are affectionately known as ankle-bashers. The ship's hull was designed for strength so there was no place for traditional portholes. Instead they had these deck-mounted vertical light/ventilation shafts which would funnel light and fresh air down to the decks below.
