The Written Stone
This curious stone gives its name to the nearby farm and district. The stone is about ten feet long and fifteen inches deep. The inscription reads 'RAVFFE RADCLIFFE LAID THIS STONE TO LYE FOR EVER AD 1655'. It is thought that the stone was once a boundary stone. An old legend recounts the dire effects which would befall anyone trying to move it and tradition declares that this spot was once the scene of a cruel and barbarous murder, the stone having been laid down to appease the restless spirit of the deceased.
