Cliffs above Redgate Beach
Cliffs above Redgate Beach
The beach, and the coast path which climbed the wooded gully on the left, have now been closed for many years because of rock falls.
From Review of Access to the Coast around Torbay (December 2003):
"The cliff to the rear of Redgate Beach is the site of a major natural landslide. The cliff is formed from massive limestone bedrock which sits on weak shale. This shale allows the limestone rock above it to slide across and downwards on a slip plane. When this occurs a landslide takes place which results in rock falls from the cliff. Large rock falls occurred in the winter of 1975/76 and June 1996. A gabion basket inceptor wall was constructed in 1976 to offer some protection to beach operators and users. This wall was significantly damaged by the rock fall in June 1996. The Council’s consultant geologist, Frederick Sherrell Ltd., has monitored the site since the late 1960’s. Reports by Frederick Sherrell Ltd. were produced after the rock fall in 1996 and again in 1997 both of which recommended remedial works. The recommendations advised in 1996 were carried out, but not the ones contained in the 1997 report. In addition the bridge which provides access to Redgate Beach from Anstey’s Cove suffered extensive storm damage in 1970. The bridge was repaired, but deterioration has continued and the storms in 1997 caused significant damage to the bridge." LinkExternal link
The bridge has now been removed (compare SX9364 : Redgate Beach from Walls Hill with SX9364 : Anstey's Cove). It is a shame that a spectacular section of coast path has been lost.
