SC3875 : The Victoria Pier extension tramway
Douglas, Isle of Man, Great Britain

The Victoria Pier extension tramway
In the late 1950s, what was almost certainly the very last horse tramway extension ever built in Britain was completed, when about 75 yards of extra track was laid to extend the line nearer to Victoria Pier. The idea was justified because (1) a visit from HM the Queen was imminent and she would travel by horse tram: this would facilitate her transfer from the Royal Yacht. (2) it would help passengers transferring to and from the steamers, (3) it would provide an off-street resting place for the horses before the return trip. It did not work out well, because there was a slight upward slope on the track, and the horses were reluctant to go further than their accustomed stopping place. In the event, the Queen did use the extension, but it saw very little use after that, so this picture with open car No 21 using it, is quite rare.
