East Molesey: Island Barn Reservoir valve towers
East Molesey: Island Barn Reservoir valve towers
Island Barn Reservoir was built by the Metropolitan Water Board and was opened in 1911. It gets its name from the fact that this area between the River Mole and its distributary channel, the River Ember, was known as the island (as it was entirely enclosed by these two rivers, and by the River Thames) and because the island had a barn on it! These are the two valve towers which are the points at which water is let out of the reservoir.
