SU6178 : Basildon
near to Lower Basildon, West Berkshire, Great Britain

Basildon
Basildon was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes, who made his fortune with the East India Company. This part of Berkshire became known as the 'English Hindoostan' at that time because there were so many rich men returning from India who decided to settle here. The house however had a chequered history and was nearly demolished in the inter-war period; fortunately it has survived into National Trust ownership.
