According to legend, Thomas the Rhymer fell asleep here beneath a tree on the side of the Eildon Hills. When he awoke he met the Queen of the Fairies and was taken to Fairyland for what seemed to him like a few days. He was then brought back to the Eildon Tree and found that 7 years had elapsed. Thomas was a real man, Thomas Learmonth of Erceldoune (now Earlston) Castle, who lived from 1220-1297. The inscription on the stone reads:-
