SM9736 : Common haircap moss (Polytrichum commune)
near to Fishguard/Abergwaun, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Great Britain

Common haircap moss (Polytrichum commune)
This moss is easy to recognise: its stems are rigid and erect, with the long, pointed leaves arranged spirally around the stem, and at right angles to it, giving a star-like appearance when viewed from above. Groups of the plant can look rather like miniature conifer forests.
The generic name means "many-hairs" and refers to the hairy calyptra (or cap) which covers the 4-sided capsule until they mature, as here. The ripe capsule splits to eject spores.
Growing at the base of a tree in damp conditions near the river.
