Garden spider (Araneus diadematus)
I think this is the very common spider named for its diadem-like marking - but I could not be sure. It is certainly an orb spider and from its size a female, much larger than the male. It may be about to produce its last brood of eggs before the coming cold weather brings about its death. Seen here on a hedge.
