Stanton post mill - the patent sails
Stanton post mill - the patent sails
Stanton post mill TL9773 : Stanton Postmill is fitted with four of Cubitt's patent sails having shutters operated via bell cranks from the central spider. The spider is on the end of the striking shaft and in operation a weight keeps the shutters closed against wind pressure. If the wind blows too hard the weight is overcome and the shutters open to 'spill' the wind and prevent overspeeding of the sails.
The metal canister (or poll end) holding the sweeps is visible on the end of the windshaft.
